I’ve written about HotelTonight in the past, usually in the context of getting free credits, and we were lucky to have a representative from HotelTonight speak at TravelCon OC back in February. Although I can’t say I find many uses for the app and it’s last-minute booking platform personally, I do know several people that do make use of it because it helps them save money over normal rates.
It looks like the app has recently launched a “room” called The Spontaneity Suite for locations around Australia. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard of and presents a truly unique hotel experience from the limited information available on it.
The suite is mobile – made up of two shipping containers that have been completely decked out in glass and the usual luxury hotel amenities. There’s quite a few extra goodies that come along with the suite as well: a rooftop terrace and hot tub, floor to ceiling windows, breakfast and dinner for two, a cocktail station, daily rooftop champagne and cheese board service, and transfers within Melbourne. And WiFi, of course.
The suite has been placed in the Yarra Valley Vineyard in Melbourne to kick things off. The suite is literally placed in the middle of a field with views of rolling hills and the valley, and from the pictures it looks like quite a unique experience. Plans are to move it to Sydney and other Australian cities in the future. One of the promotional images has it sitting across from the Sydney Opera House…which I’ll discuss in a second.
But first, what exactly does all this cost? Well…that’s where you might as well forget about staying in this suite. HotelTonight lists the value at a whopping $32K per night. Yes, you’re reading that correct. There was a five day promotional period where it could be had for just $99 followed by a single day of auction-style pricing, but the app currently shows me a price of $22,544 for tomorrow night (search the city of Melbourne). No thanks – I’d rather rent out an island for that kind of money.
All proceeds to go charity (at least they did through 9/1/15 – information is unclear after that point). For that kind of money I think you’d be much better off at premium hotel like the Park Hyatt Sydney, which has views of the Sydney Opera House year round. A price of $1K/night at the Park Hyatt Sydney seems like a bargain compared to The Spontaneity Suite’s ridiculous pricing.
Somewhat surprisingly, the app shows the suite with a 100% “thumbs up” rating from 6 reviews. I imagine these 6 reviews came from the 5 promotional nights at $99 and the auction-style night on 9/1/15 (not sure what the final price ended at).
Unless HotelTonight comes back with some more promotional nights at $99 or similarly reasonable rates, I simply can’t imagine anyone being interested in booking this suite at regular price. Still, it’s a unique idea and I like the fact that proceeds to go charity…if anyone ever books the room at that price.
