Let’s address the obvious question upfront: Why use a travel advisor when you can book a cruise or tour online The short answer? Because booking direct rarely gives you the best experience or the best value. Can you do it, yes, but what when things go wrong? Don’t be a small fish in a big pond. Instead be a shark!
For cruises and escorted tours in particular, working with a Virtuoso travel advisor is one of those insider moves seasoned travelers quietly rely on. It’s not about luxury for luxury’s sake. It’s about leverage, access, and having someone who actually knows what they’re doing when things go sideways. I’ll go into the Perks and reasons more below. Full disclosure. I work as an independent advisor for Scott & Thomas Travel, a virtuoso member.
Virtuoso Perks Are Real—and They Add Up Fast
Virtuoso isn’t a marketing buzzword. It’s an invitation‑only network of top travel advisors who collectively represent billions in annual bookings. That’s right, invite only. Meaning every Virtuoso agency has been vouch for and making a splash in the travel industry. Together, the buying power translates into benefits you simply won’t see when booking online. In fact, when you’re booking online you’re leaving money on the table!

On cruises and tours, Virtuoso amenities often include:
- Shipboard or hotel credits (often $100–$1,000+)
- Complimentary shore excursions or special experiences
- Cabin or room upgrades (when available)
- Reduced deposits or added flexibility
- Private receptions, onboard hosts, or VIP access
Here’s the key point: the base fare is usually the same as booking direct. The difference is that the Virtuoso booking includes tangible extras that have real dollar value. Sometimes there are discounts, other times its added perks. If you’re paying the same price, why wouldn’t you take the version with perks?
Looking for hotel perks, but hate calling an advisor each time you want to access additional hotel perks. Check out our booking portal. Use access code “Private” to log in. Enjoy late check out, early check in, resort credits and more. Only available via an Advisor. When you make a booking I am notified and I ensure everything is in proper order.
Cruise Credits & Discounts
Over the years I have worked hard building out my cliental who want to see more and go further. My clients are looking for what’s next. In 2022 it was Antarctica. That was the hot spot for my customers even before Nicole Kidman went or other influencers. Svalbard, Greenland and the Northwest Passage is growing in popularity, but so are places in West Africa such as Bijagos Archipelago. By having a large client base, it allows me to offer private deals on many expeditions, cruises and river cruises.

More importantly even if our price is the same as booking direct, we have awesome onboard credit on many companies! Meaning you get more when you book via me, than on the company’s website.
Below are just a few examples of added bonuses you receive with booking via me
- Atlas Ocean Voyage $200 per person onboard credit
- Aurora Expedition $250 per person onboard credit
- Aqua Expedition $100 onboard credit or 50 minute full body massage (depends on departure/ship) per person
- Crystal Cruises up to $250 per person onboard credit
- Explora Journey’s $165 Onboard credit per person
- Four Season Yachts up to $1,800 food and beverage credit
- HX Expeditions $100 onboard credit per person
- Lindblad-Nat Geo $100 onboard credit per person
- Oceania up to $250 onboard credit (select departures only) per person
- ORIENT EXPRESS SAILING YACHTS: EUR 500 per stateroom on all voyages.
- Riverside Luxury Cruises €150 EUR Shipboard Credit Per Stateroom
- Seabourn up to $400 onboard credit per person
- Sea Cloud Cruises up to $100 per room onboard credit
- Silversea $250 onboard credit (select departures only) per person
- Swan Hellenic $150 per person onboard credit per person
- Quark Expeditions $250 per person onboard credit per person
And this is just the tip of the of iceberg! There are more deals and bonus offers on several companies, so many I cannot list them all. Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, etc. Big ship and small. Never book direct. These onboard credit often stack with other promos too. If you book directly you are leaving money on the table every time! This is why you should contact me before booking your next cruise.
Plus there’s also Virtuoso Voyages. Special voyages where we have private shore excursions, a private reception, and even an onboard host to help ensure everything goes right! Get the most of your cruise by booking one of these vacations. Ask me for more details!
Google Can’t Tell You Which Cruise Is Actually Right
Not all cruises or tours are created equal, even when the itineraries look identical. Two ships may sail the same route, but deliver wildly different experiences. If you expect google to chatGPT to guide you, you’re likely to end up unsatisfied. Having been provided the wrong information. This is where I come in.
A Virtuoso advisor helps answer questions Copilot can’t. Experience matters, don’t leave it to chatGPT or whatever AI source you prefer.
Not to mention, calling a cruise line is like calling up your bias uncle. Cruise line call centers sell one brand. Some of those call centers are located overseas, and many are filled with people who have never even been on a cruise. They can answer questions from their FAQs, but nothing more.
Then of course, there are the online reviews. Some are great, others are terrible. Always read them carefully, because it’s going to be a roll of the dice. Thankfully, a Virtuoso advisor works across dozens of cruise lines and tour operators and can give unfiltered, experience‑based guidance. That’s especially important for expedition cruising, river cruises, and premium escorted tours where small details make or break the trip.
When Travel Breaks, You Want an Advocate
Weather delays. Mechanical issues. Itinerary changes. Canceled ports. Supplier “policy.” Travel has gotten more complicated, not less. When you book online, you’re on your own. And depending on the company, usually stuck waiting on hold. When you book through a Virtuoso advisor, you have someone whose job is to fix problems and push back when needed.
That means:
- Advocacy with cruise lines and tour operators
- Escalation to real decision‑makers, not scripts
- Help with rebooking and changes
- Fighting for fair compensation when plans change
This is where the value of an advisor becomes painfully obvious, usually right when things go wrong. Having someone like me who has contacts in headquarters makes all the difference. I have dozens of stories of how I have been able to save or reschedule client vacations when things go sideways. From clients who passport were lost by USPS and days before departure we were able to reschedule their Antarctica cruise for $0 to larger refunds and compensation after cruise lines offered $0 for major deviations. Even refund for pre and post trip extensions that just didn’t meet the mark. When you work a good agent, you have the backing of not only the agent and agency, but the entire virtuoso network.
It’s Not More Expensive—It’s Usually Smarter
One of the biggest myths in travel is that advisors cost more. Some charge a consulting fee. I never do. In reality, a Virtuoso advisor typically offers:
- The same public pricing
- Added benefits layered on top
- Clear explanations of what’s included—and what isn’t
More importantly, I can help travelers avoid expensive mistakes: non‑refundable fares that don’t make sense, poorly designed itineraries, or cruises that don’t match expectations. When you looking to go on vacation, use an expert. Even if it’s not one of the 112 countries I’ve been to, I have contact that have been there. I have local guides, people on the ground and can build you a custom tour from the ground up. Want something private instead of joining a small group. That’s typically available.
That kind of guidance saves money and frustration, by most importantly time.
Travel Gets Better When Someone Knows You
The real advantage of working with a Virtuoso advisor shows up after the first trip. Over time, we learn your preferences: ships you like, cabins you prefer, pacing you enjoy, and destinations still on your list. Instead of starting from scratch every time, your travel gets more personalized and more dialed‑in with each booking. The more we work together, the better your next trip and recommendation is going to be.
Bottom Line
Using a Virtuoso travel advisor to book cruises and tours isn’t about outsourcing decisions, it’s really about upgrading the entire experience. You get better perks, better advice, and real advocacy when it matters most. And in most cases, you pay no more than you would booking on your own. In fact, you’re gaining value and often saving money,
In a travel world that’s increasingly automated, having a human expert in your corner is still one of the smartest moves you can make. When you’re ready to book your next adventure, consider contacting me to help!
