Alaska Airlines has always been a fan of wine. In previous years, cases of wine flew free from select airports when flying Alaska Airlines. Even the Alaska Airlines credit card use to provide free wine tasting at several wineries. Now, Alaska Airlines is allowing a case of wine to be checked as a bag for free from 29 west coast airports! The former policy which was limited to a few regional airports such as Walla Walla and Santa Rosa. This program is receiving a massive expansion!
Wine Flies Free
There are hundreds of wineries on the West Coast and now Alaska wants to take you there and let you continue to sip wine at home for no additional costs. The West Coast wine flies free program allows Alaska Mileage Plan members to check one case of wine for free and carry wine over state lines. Due to impractical laws, shipping wine over state lines without a local distributor can be very expensive and time consuming. The free checked wine program allows the smaller wineries and large ones to send home a case of adult juice for no additional charge.
Alaska Airlines will allow one case of wine, up to twelve bottles, to be checked for free. International flights will not qualify for this program. Wine also only flies free on Alaska, Horizon and Skywest flights. Starting in May, wine will also fly free on Virgin America flights, but then again come May, Virgin American will technically be non-existent. The fee waiver will only be $25. Therefore if one decides to check three bags/cases the third case/bag will still be $75. MVP Gold and 75K members, I am sorry to report that you cannot check two bags plus one case of wine for free.
