Some initial thoughts on the first flight of my to Bhutan and Nepal. Chicago to Hong Kong is the longest flight, and the only one of the trip in first class. I’ve flown Cathay Pacific First Class before, but it has been 7 years (time flies!). I had high expectations. The seat itself hasn’t changed in this time, other than some refreshing of upholstery. Various soft product items are different as well. The seat remains excellent, and to me among the most comfortable bed I’ve had on a plane.

Cathay Pacific First Class Chicago to Hong Kong
The last time I flew this leg was special, in that my wife and I were the only passengers in the cabin. It was also special because there was a medical diversion, which led to 2 unplanned stops, in Anchorage and Tokyo. The former to get offload a sick passenger, and the latter to get a new crew for the rest of the trip. On this part of the trip I’m traveling alone, and the 4 of the 6 seats in the cabin were occupied. Only issue was a delay due to unfavorable wind conditions on both the inbound and on our flight, so we were about an hour delayed on arrival.
First class on a carrier like Cathay Pacific is undoubtedly a nice experience. I’m spoiled to be able to have flown it again. My friend flew in United and Lufthansa economy, so I can’t really complain. My luxurious first flight was mostly good, but not flawless. Tasty food, warm service and a very comfortable place to sit and sleep on the long flight were excellent.

I’ve talked about my love for Hong Kong. Since that post, I’ve had multiple more visits here, and wrote about the various Cathay Pacific Lounges in the airport. My love for Hong Kong is not diminished, there is always more to see. On this trip, I visited some new places, and some familiar places. just before leaving, I had time to enjoy probably my favorite lounge in Hong Kong, the Pier, as pictured above. On this visit, I did a lot of walking (and sweating) and made room for tasty food, including a return to Tim Ho Wan, and the tasty Char Siu Bao. It has been a while since I’ve had this from here, and it was as good as I remembered.
