Jumbo Jet lovers rejoice as the Qantas Double deck super jumbo A380 returns to the Los Angeles – Sydney route on July 29, 2022. After the A380 was reintroduced in March 2022, the Qantas A380 was reassigned to other routes and replaced by a much smaller 787-9. Now, after a month and a half hiatus, the A380 is back with a refurbished cabin. Qantas’ schedule now shows an Airbus A380 reappearing as QF11 from Sydney to Los Angeles on Friday July 29.
The Qantas A380 has been refurbished with the airline’s latest cabins. Flyers will enjoy the new business class and premium economy seats. In addition, the plane boasts two new upper deck lounges for premium passengers. The new flight experience will be a hit with customers. Qantas First Class customers will enjoy their amazingly oversize first-class suites.
Return Of Qantas A380s
During the Pandemic Qantas parked their A380s in Victorville, California. Stowed away for several years, the A380’s future was uncertain. As many airlines completely retired the four engine super jumbos, Qantas had other plans. Now, with tourism roaring back after a 2-year hiatus, Qantas will bring 10 A380s back to service. Their fleet is shrinking by two. Those A380s will be utilized for parts. One A380 is already being dismantled at Victorville airplane graveyard.
The return of the A380 is celebrated today, but likely will be short-lived. Qantas plans to replace the A380 by a fleet of much smaller Airbus A350 towards the end of this decade.
787 still dominates Australia to North America
Sydney to Los Angeles will have two dedicated A380s. Meaning that the Boeing 787 will still appear on the long-haul segment. The 787-9 will continue to fly Friday’s QF 17 plus other flights through the week. The 787 does not have a dedicated first class, but instead a much smaller business, premium, and economy cabins. Flyers looking for an upgraded experience should try to jump aboard the larger A380.
The Qantas 787 is also the only aircraft flying between Melbourne and Los Angeles. Along with flights to and from Brisbane. Both Vancouver and Dallas also are operated by the B787. With a smaller A380 fleet, some routes which previously utilized the A380 will never see the super jumbo again.
At the time of writing Qantas still has 3 A380s parked between a maintenance hangar at LAX, with two more at Abu Dhabi. These A380s restart date is still unknown.
