Swan Hellenic Review: Diana’s Christening Voyage

by Rocky Horan
Last updated September 14, 2023

In the world of luxury expeditions, Swan Hellenic has long been recognized for its commitment to providing exceptional experiences all over the world. Among its fleet, the majestic SH Diana stands as a testament to the company’s dedication to elegance, sophistication, and exploration. Launched in 2023, SH Diana is captivating travelers with her timeless charm and unique itineraries.

I was lucky enough to join the SH Diana in Amsterdam for her christening and then sail with her and the crew through Norway. Experiencing everything that Swan Hellenic has to offer on this beautiful luxury expedition ship. The new Swan Hellenic’s Diana is a must-experience vessel for discerning travelers seeking an unforgettable journey at sea to some of the world’s most remote locations.

Where does Swan Hellenic Cruise

Swan Hellenic Diana and sister ships the SH Minerva and SH Vega offer a distinctive cruising experience that transcends the boundaries of conventional travel. Inspired by the golden age of cruising, this vessel allows passengers to immerse themselves in the rich history and cultural tapestry of the destinations it visits. From the Mediterranean to the remote corners of the globe; including both polar regions and everywhere in between. From The Arctic to Antarctica a cruise on SH Diana takes guests on extraordinary adventures as all of Swan Hellenics brand new ships are ice class vessels. Watch out Seabourn Expeditions, you have strong competition here.

Whether exploring ancient Egyptian ruins, wandering through vibrant markets of Africa, or engaging with local communities in Asia, every moment onboard is an opportunity to embrace the world’s diversity and heritage.

As most cruise ships focus on the common destinations of the Caribbean, Alaska and the Mediterranean, Swan Hellenic goes further and goes where others don’t. Tried and true to the company’s tagline, Go Where Others Don’t. Explore Australia’s Kimberlys, the island nations of the South Pacific or the West coast of Africa. These ships offer some of the most unique itineraries I’ve seen in the Industry.

Diana’s itineraries are carefully crafted to provide guests with unique and immersive experiences. With a focus on off-the-beaten-path destinations, Swan Hellenic offers a selection of extraordinary shore excursions led by expert guides. Whether it’s visiting remote islands, encountering wildlife in their natural habitats, or exploring UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Diana’s itineraries are tailored to ignite the spirit of adventure in every traveler.  With a near 1:1 cruise to passenger ration, get ready to be spoiled!

Exquisite Design and Amenities

Stepping aboard Diana is akin to entering a floating palace. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, the ship exudes elegance and sophistication with tasteful art and attention to detail throughout. Even though the Diana is a small ship holding only 198 passengers, she’s been designed to provide a big ship feel. Even the entry features beautiful stairs with glass panels which opens the entire area making the space feel larger and more open.

The public areas are equally impressive, boasting opulent lounges, a well-stocked library, and spacious dining room where culinary delights await. Swan Hellenic has launched a partnership with JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs. Which brings some of the best food I’ve ever had at Sea. I’m talking about designer dishes that left me drooling and wanting more. I didn’t know food could be so good while on a cruise. Blowing Seabourn, Holland America, Princess, and Silverseas all out of the water in my opinion.

Back to the ship, there’s a large observation lounge which doubles for daily recaps and educational lectures. Plus it turns into a lounge at night for drinking, playing games, and listening to live music in the evening hours. a large room with couches and a large screen

In the rear near the pool is the club lounge which hosts light breakfasts and lunches. Plus it is open all day with self service coffee, soft drinks, and juice. Find a light bite here between meals or partake is one of JRE’s special chefs dining tasting in the club lounge. Through the JRE partnership there’s the opportunity to join JRE chefs for a chef tasting dinner onboard. These are among the coolest features of Swan Hellenic and should satisfy any foodie!

Spa, Gym, and Pools

Diana also features a spa and fitness center for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. The Spa prices are actually very affordable too. I paid just $180 for a 90 minute message! Not too bad compared to most ships Spas. It did help they had a sale the 2nd the last day, buy 60 minutes and get 90.

Treatment rooms and salon offer a great place to relax while at sea

The small ship’s spa also includes both a steam room and sauna with complimentary access for all guests. The gym is also complimentary and in the Spa area of the ship.

The gym has both free weights, machines, and cardio options including bikes, treadmills and ellipticals.

The jacuzzi is just off the Spa. You can access it via the spa or from the outside deck.  Those sitting the in Sauna also have a nice view of the Jacuzzi.

Speaking of being outside, the pool deck off the club lounge is also great. There’s a bar and dining area that is utilized in warmer areas and even on nice days in the colder regions. With heaters to boot, there’s no getting cold while sitting outside. The pool was always very warm, constantly warm enough to swim on the cold weather. The infinity pool was stunning, and a great place to relax while on the ship cruising.

Yet, one of my favorite features of this ship, is the outdoor space on the bow. Perfect for taking in the views, but also has a very unique design and is aesthetically pleasing.

Diana’s Suites and Rooms

The tastefully appointed cabins and suites offer luxurious accommodations with plush furnishings, ensuring that guests enjoy a restful and indulgent stay. Plus soon to come electric fireplaces in every room!

There are several different room types on each ship. My partner and I had a Balcony and the room was comfortable and perfect for our expedition. The balcony rooms are 301 square feet and feature a queen bed, a double couch, a desk, and a bathroom. Although not installed yet due to supply chain issues, electric fireplaces are coming to each room.

The bathroom in the room was small, but well set up. Larger than some cruise ship bathrooms I have been stuck in before.

While onboard I was also able to see other room types as well. Even the entry rooms which are ocean view rooms are truly beautiful. With HUGE windows, it’s hard to not think that these rooms are not veranda suites. These Oceanview rooms are slightly smaller at 215 sq feet.

For those looking for a little more space, do not overlook their suits. With bathtubs and fireplaces already installed, these will turn some heads. These large rooms are great for those traveling with a third person or if you just want a little more space.

Suites also have walk in closets and large tubs

What is great about all of Swan Hellenic’s rooms is that every room, not just suites, gets a Nespresso coffee maker, plush robes and slippers, and La Jatica bath and body products.

Swan Hellenic’s Added Value

Sean Hellenic is a premium luxury expedition company that is different from many other cruise lines. They offer cultural expedition cruises to locations around the world which is a huge value add to people who want to see the world. Unlike the big ships, there’s a big difference when you cruise on a small ship. The number one difference is the price is nearly all inclusive. Pay once and forget about it.

On every sailing you can enjoy complimentary transfers and one night hotel pre-cruise. In Amsterdam we stayed at the Hilton Amsterdam and were bused to the Port the next morning. In Tromsø Swan Hellenic utilizes the 4 star The Edge Clarion Hotel.

The SH Diana also features something very unique. The ship is outfitted with both Zodiacs for exploring remote areas and two custom built tenders for traditional ports. Meaning this ship can do a mixture of both dry and wet landings for guests and take guests up rivers and through icefields. No matter where in the world the ship sails, guests can explore to their max.

Overall Thoughts

At the heart of Swan Hellenic’s 70 year old philosophy is a commitment to providing exceptional service. The highly trained and attentive crew members onboard their three brand new ships are dedicated to ensuring that every guest’s needs are met with warmth and professionalism. From the moment of embarkation to the final farewell, we were treated to personalized attention, creating a sense of being part of an exclusive community of travelers. This level of service extends to the culinary offerings as well, with world-class chefs crafting delectable dishes using locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the flavors of the regions visited. One of my favorite dinners was room service, when I had the main dining room menu brought to the comfort of my room!
