Review: Fairmont Le Chateau Frotenac, Quebec City

by Brad
Last updated January 6, 2019

I recently visited Quebec City for a conference.  I will often go out of my way to stay with a preferred hotel chain, but this was one case where I didn’t mind booking elsewhere.  The meeting was at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac.

Le Chateau Frontenac, Quebec City

The Chateau Frontenac is one of several railway hotels across Canada originally built to serve customers traveling across Canada by train.  It is a grand style hotel, originally built in 1893. Another is the Westin Nova Scotian, I’ve reviewed before.

The public areas of the hotel were impressive, with lots of marble.  There is a nice indoor pool, and a well equipped, if cozy fitness center.  There was also a cocktail lounge that had live jazz on certain nights.

I joined the Fairmont Presidents Club loyalty program, because I don’t want to throw points away.  Simply signing up for this program gives members free in room internet access at Fairmont properties.

My room had a view of the beautiful old city, although it was partially obscured by other wings of the hotel.

My room was well appointed, although the decor and furnishings seemed dated.

Activities Outside le Chateau

Like many of my business trips, I didn’t have much free time to explore, but I did get to enjoy some excellent meals at nearby restaurants.  I also took part in a very unique activity that was adjacent to the hotel:

A toboggan run!

The only time I was able to go for a ride was while it was snowing, and only 2 of the tracks were open, and the ride was rather slow due to the conditions, but it was still fun.

The stay at the Chateau was an interesting experience.  I am spoiled by top tier status at Starwood and Hyatt which is where I focus my stays. Obviously, its not quite the same staying somewhere as a basic member. I’m happy I stayed at this hotel, its a very beautiful property, and the location was convenient in Old Quebec.  I’d certainly recommend this hotel for people visiting Quebec for the first time. It is easy walking distance to many of tourist attractions.
