Alaska Airlines Offering Bonus Elite Qualifying Miles Through 2020

by Steve Case
Last updated June 1, 2020

Alaska Airlines like the others already announced that 2020 elite status will carry over through 2021.  Alaska has just sweetened the deal with bonus elite qualifying miles through December 31, 2020.

Alaska Airlines is going the extra mile to ensure that their loyal customers maximize elite status with the airline.  Today, the airline announced two new promotions that are outstanding.  The Alaska Airlines Visa credit card bonus for restaurant purchases with a multiplier is a first time offering for the airline.  Here is the press release issued today.

50% Bonus of Elite Qualifying Miles – Limited Time Offer

  • For all flights completed June 1 through Dec. 31, 2020, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members will receive a 50% bonus of elite qualifying miles to help earn higher elite status more quickly. (*Registration isn’t required for this special, limited time offer.)

This can be very beneficial for current top-tier MVP Gold 75K members.  Those current MVP Gold 75K members will have their status extended for 2021 but they will not receive the 50,000 bonus miles for the carry-over.  Here is an easy way to earn MVP Gold 75K status for 2021 to receive the 50,000 mile bonus.

Alaska Airlines Visa Cardholders – First Time Limited Time Offers

  • Earn toward status while you spend. Cardholders can earn 2,500 elite qualifying miles for every $5,000 spent on purchases with an Alaska Airlines consumer or business Visa card from June 1 through Sept. 30, 2020, up to a maximum of 10,000 elite qualifying miles per cardholder.
  • Alaska Visa consumer cardholders can earn two miles for every dollar spent, up to $1,500, at restaurants and take-out, including delivery services from June 1 through July 31, 2020.

What Alaska Airlines Is Saying About The Promotion

“We are thankful to our loyal guests for their support during this unprecedented time,” said Ryan Butz, Alaska’s managing director of loyalty. “In addition to continuing to offer flexibility and assurance when booking flights, members can now earn miles and status when using our Alaska Airlines Visa credit card. We look forward to seeing our guests onboard when the time is right and hope this promotion can aid local restaurants and economies.”

Final Thoughts

This is truly a most generous offer by Alaska Airlines.  Alaska along with all of their competitors have announced status carry-over for 2021.  The airline goes the extra mile (pun intended) by giving customers 50% more base miles on 2020 air travel to attain status.  On top of that, restaurant miles will double through July 31st to add to your mileage account balance faster.

The Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan is unique because it partners with 16 global partners for both mileage earning and redemption.  The airline that I have always called the airline with the “non-alliance” alliance will join One World in the summer of 2021.
