Earn 5% Back on Groceries and Streaming Services

by Rocky Horan
Last updated June 15, 2021

This summer you can earn 5% back on grocery and streaming services with the Chase Freedom Flex card. The card usually earns just 1 point per dollar everywhere, but offers rotating categories each quarter to reward card holders. This summer, whip out the BBQ and earn 5% back. Or you can earn 5 points per dollar when you combine the points with other Chase credit cards. Grocery stores do not include big box stores such as Walmart or Target, but Kroger, Safeway, and all the other big chain grocery stores are included. So from Trader Joes to QFC you can earn more points this summer.

Streaming services are limited to what Chase considers streaming services. These currently include the following:

  • Disney+
  • Hulu
  • ESPN+
  • Netflix
  • Pandora
  • Spotify
  • YouTube TV
  • Vudu
  • Fubo TV
  • Apple Music
  • SiriusXM
  • Sling

Chase Freedom cash-back calendar 2021

Each year, the 5% categories change slightly. However there is a lot of repetition each year as well. At least once a year it’s groceries and gas. Each quarter card holders can earn 5% back on $1500. Or the equivalent of $75 quarterly, $300 annually. Earn unlimited 1% back everywhere else. Not bad for a card with no annual fee.

  • January to March: Wholesale clubs (Costco, BJ’s, Sam’s Club), cable, internet, phone services and select streaming services
  • April to June: Gas stations and home improvement stores
  • July to September: Grocery stores (excluding Target and Walmart) and select streaming services
  • October to December: TBD

Earn Points vs Cash Back

For those more interested in earning points for travel, that too is a possibility. Chase Freedom cards earn cash back but can be pooled with other cards. If you have a Chase Sapphire card, Chase Freedom points can easily be transferred between Ultimate reward accounts. This is also true for Chase Business Ink card holders. This allows you to maximize earning when pooling points. Then transfer those valuable points, in this case 7,500 between accounts and to airlines and hotels.

Remember, Chase 5% categories are only possible with the Chase Freedom Flex card. The Chase Freedom Unlimited does not have rotating 5% categories, but instead offers 1.5x points on all purchases and 3x points on drug stores and dinning. If you’re interested in earning even more points on Groceries. Consider the American express Gold card. It earns 4x points on $25,000 of grocery spending and 4x points on dinning too.
