Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Platinum Metal Cards Sent Out

by Brad
Last updated December 18, 2019

Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Platinum, while a nice perk, it isn’t anything special, now with 2 tiers above it. My main benefit is that at least I’m off the roller coaster of having to qualify each year. Marriott has struggled mightily with the transition, although through much of 2019, I didn’t have too many issues. I am no longer actively avoiding booking at Marriott properties. They are hard to avoid, and I’ll end the year with slightly more night with Marriott than with Hyatt, which is my preferred program. Of course, 15 nights came from my Marriott credit card. Not quite enough to make Titanium, and I really didn’t see the benefit in stretching for that status for marginally better benefits.

I’ve talked my earning Lifetime Platinum status via SPG, and how Marriott eventually came change their lifetime program for the now rebranded Bonvoy. I had seen some chatter online about those with Lifetime Titanium status receiving a welcome packet. Not sure about the timing of this, as in, I don’t know why I got this now. I had no expectation of getting anything for my relatively pedestrian Lifetime Platinum status. Lifetime Titanium members have already received metal cards. I recently received this from Marriott Bonvoy:

Going from the top tier of status with SPG to 3rd from the top, so Platinum is below annual Ambassador and Titanium members in a much larger program, I don’t feel that special. I guess Marriott is at least trying. They sent out gift cards to some elite members earlier this year. Seemingly this was an apology for countless issues with the transition.

Anyway, inside the packet is a metallic card and a letter from SVP of Global Loyalty, David Flueck. I’m pleased to note that the word “forever” is used a few times.  I’m hopeful their definition is the same as mine…

These metal cards are fine, presumably they are meant to look fancy, but don’t really serve any purpose. I’m certainly not going to carry them when I travel. I’ll add my new lifetime card to the same file that my old one stays in. The SPG packet also included a map with the destinations visited. Nothing personalized on this new one other than my name on the letter and the card. The fancy plush bathrobe I got from SPG for lifetime status is a very nice gift, and actually functional. I’d use it if my wife didn’t commandeer it for herself.

How about you, did you get your lifetime packet from Marriott?
