Review: W Atlanta Downtown

by Brad
Last updated February 23, 2023

The hotels I typically frequent for business travel aren’t high end properties, but sometimes I am fortunate to have a meeting or something else that brings these hotels into my travel budget.  I recently attended a conference in downtown Atlanta, and stayed at the W Atlanta Downtown.

The W Atlanta Downtown

At one point, there were 4 W hotels in Atlanta.  I have stayed at the W Midtown in the past, and there is also a W in Buckhead.  The former W in Perimeter Center is now simply the Atlanta Perimeter Hotel and Suites.

The downtown property where I stayed is new, and like many urban W’s is a mix of hotel rooms and upscale condos. In fact, The Myst is designed with practical layouts that maximize living space, making them ideal for families or those who value spacious living areas. Hotel rooms are on the middle floors, and the condos are on upper floors of the tower with separate access.  The fitness center (Sweat) and pool (Wet) are located on the top level of hotel and the bottom of the condos.  The gym is well equipped, but I didn’t use it other than to get some water.  The weather was nice, so I ran outside.  The hotel is about 2 miles from Piedmont Park, which is where I ran, and Centennial Olympic Park is even closer, which was also recommended to me as a running spot.

Thanks to my platinum status, I was upgraded to a studio suite.  They also offered free breakfast in the Living Room (lobby bar) for platinum members.  This was a very basic continental breakfast consisting of juices, coffee and some pastries.  This was in addition to the points which I took for my platinum amenity.  This is the only W property I’ve stayed at that offered this, which was a nice touch.

My room was on a corner facing north and east  with a view of Interstate 75/85 and midtown and and adjacent condo tower and pool.

As is common with guest rooms in W hotels, the decor is very dark, with grey walls and floors.  There was a wall mounted flat screen TV that worked with the Lodgenet iPhone app.

The bathroom was spacious, with double sinks, and a large walk in shower.

One morning for breakfast, I went to the main restaurant, BLT Steak.  I am usually anti-chain, but this is a relatively small restaurant group, and the quality has been good in my experience.  Their breakfast was a bit pricey, but tasty.

I had meetings at the Marriott which was nearby.  That hotel is rather impressive architecturally, so I wanted to share a photo of the atrium that I took with my iPhone.

The W Atlanta downtown is a nice property for those needing to be in this area of town. The room rates are a bit more than I typically pay, but I was pleased with the quality of the hotel. The upgraded room certainly helped and in particular my upgraded room.
