Alaska Airlines shared news about its main credit card today. The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card from Bank of America now comes with a few added benefits. First, if you purchase any food or beverage on the plane, you’ll get a 20% discount in the form of a statement credit.
Second, if you purchase a day pass to one of the Alaska Lounges (open in Seattle, New York, and elsewhere) then you can get a 50% discount. Keep in mind you already get free lounge access if you have a paid first class ticket or booked a first class award; upgraded tickets still need to pay for access.
The food discount is common among many airline credit cards, so it is good to see Alaska Airlines adding it. Alaska was recently ranked as having some of the healthiest catering in the sky among US airlines. And the Alaska Lounges, although few in number, are pretty nice. Some airlines don’t even allow day passes anymore. Letting you get in for half off is a good deal.
The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card still comes with an annual companion fare for $99 (plus taxes) that you can use on any itinerary operated by Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air. I keep it around just for that since it’s easily worth a couple hundred dollars in savings every year. And for now at least, there is an offer to get 40,000 bonus miles when you apply and spend $2,000 in the first 90 days.
