Longer Antarctica expeditions which visit South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands are also available. These itineraries also include travel to Antarctica and that Antarctica peninsula. These Antarctica expeditions begin at $27,999 for a 21-day sailing, before further savings and discounts. Additional options are included with other ports of call in South America. The best part of these longer journeys is the guarantee of experiencing emperor penguin colonies. While nearly all trips to Antarctica will see penguins, those to the Falkland Islands and South Georgia are extra special. Penguin colonies are the largest here and do no disappoint.

The Seabourn Venture and Pursuit are both brand new ultra-luxury polar class vessel. These Antarctica cruse ships are much smaller than the more well know Seabourn Odyssey and Seabourn Encore ships. Instead of hosting 500+ guests, Seabourn’s new Antarctica expedition ships hold a maximum of 264 people.

Both expedition ships boast 6 dining rooms and bars areas. The cruise ships also has a rare polar heated pool and several hot tubs, all built specifically for small tours and frigid environments. The expedition cruises are small compared to the mega ships you’ll find in the Caribbean or Alaska, but this allows for a more intimate experience. Not to mention, smaller ships are required if you want to land and walk/hike Antarctica.

Why Visit Antarctica in November

November is when most cruise lines kick off their Antarctica season.

See Antarctica when the snow is still fresh and the penguins are resting atop unexplored snowbanks. Beating the rest of the tourists and scientist to Antarctica.  Visiting in November is fantastic for penguin viewing. The days start to lengthen and penguin chicks start to hatch. As you sail to Antarctica watch out for the beautiful spring wildflowers which are blooming on the sub Antarctic islands, and albatrosses, petrels and other seabirds can be spotted over the Drake Passage.

Consider Antarctica in December

December is arguably the best month to visit Antarctica. Temperatures warm up to some of the hottest of the year, and as the summer solstice arrives, so does the long hours of daylight and wildlife active everywhere. Enjoy 22-23 hours of daylight. Typically, December is  also the most expensive time to visit, but this changes in 2023 thanks for inaugural seasonal pricing on the Seabourn Pursuit.   December also brings a ton of wildlife highlights include migrating whales and seal pups season. Bird viewing remains high as many birds seek their mate for spring time.

Exploring Antarctica with Seabourn

All Seabourn expeditions are landing expedition cruises. Meaning you will get off the cruise ship daily. Explore the white continent by zodiacs. Spend each day walking and exploring the white continent by foot and zodiac. Under international agreements, ships with more than 500 passengers are restricted from landing sites. Since the Seabourn Venture and Pursuit hold less than 500 people, unlike the Seabourn Odyssey or Encore, you’ll be able to get off the cruise ship. There is also enough Zodiacs for each passenger to simultaneously disembark and explore the waters with an expedition leader.

Shore excursions to the Antarctic peninsula for wildlife viewing and interaction with a penguin colony is one of the highlights of the journey. Leaving the luxury cruise aboard small ships with the group creates these once in a lifetime opportunities to see some of the rarest sights in the world.

With Seabourn, all zodiac tours are included in the cost of the ship and are the primarily daily activity, happening several times a day. Weather condition dependent, you will explore Antarctica by Zodiac. Seabourn’s newest director of expedition has 13 years’ experience in expeditions. Coming from Lindblad Expeditions, Jen is helping reimagine Seabourn’s Antarctica expedition program. You can look forward to close encounters with animals along with sailing along side of icebergs larger than the ship in the Weddell sea. Zodiacs will take passengers to shore for short hikes and exploration of the 7th continent.

Each Zodiac will have a naturalist/expedition leader who will answer questions and educate passengers. Back on the ship, additional naturalist are ready to educate and answer questions. There are other onboard activities which include the famous polar plunge and daily educational seminars. Plus, music, entertainment and of course, Seabourn luxury 5 star service with their nearly 1:1 staff to guest ratio.

Added extras

Each Antarctica cruise also starts off with complimentary add-ons. The Antarctica cruise includes a night at a luxury hotel in central Buenos Aires where you are free to explore the South American capitol ($329 value) and airport transfer to the charter flight between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia (port of call). The charter flight is part of the fare (~$900 savings per person).  Each passenger also receives a Helly Hansen winter jacket (~$250 value). Also note, with Seabourn Wifi, all dining options, gratuities, and alcohol and other beverages are included in the costs of the sailing. Enjoy true all inclusive cruising.

Unlike other cruise lines, Seabourn includes nearly everything in the cost. On Seabourn there are only a few extra costs. For example there are only two excursions which are not complimentary. You can include an Antarctica submarine excursion exploring the depths of the Weddell Sea for 40 minutes in an electric sub. Or consider Kayaking in Antarctica on a guided Antarctica Kayak adventure. Otherwise include multiple daily complimentary Antarctic excursions.

Bottom Line

Visiting Antarctica is a once in a lifetime experience. Most people will never have the opportunity to travel to Antarctica, but a lucky few will. With the rapid ice melt it’s only a matter of time until Antarctica is off limits to cruising and tourism. I am excited to take a group of 50+ individuals on a “gay” Antarctica trip in Feb 2023. This specific trip is mostly sold out at costs nearly double at $16,000. Hence why, sharing the $9,000 deal with readers is a big deal! Yet, if you are “friends of Dorothy” and want to join our gay Antarctica cruise in Feb 2023, please let me know. I’m happy to have you join us. Otherwise, more importantly for everyone else, there is an amazing deal open to everyone for travel in November or December 2023.

Despite the trip that I am planning with Seabourn, you too can travel to Antarctica. Travel to Antarctica for less than $10,000 per person and get the best discount by booking now. Contact me and lock in your vacation for travel in 2023. Prices this low are unheard of and are more typical to bunk beds and shared rooms on “fishing” vessels, not world class luxury Antarctic expeditions.
